Top 10 Common Swimming Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced swimmers make mistakes. Learn the top 10 errors and how to correct them.

Whether you're a novice or a seasoned swimmer, it's easy to develop bad habits in the water. Recognizing and correcting these common swimming mistakes can significantly improve your efficiency, speed, and overall enjoyment of the sport. Here are the top mistakes we frequently see: 1. Holding Your Breath: This causes tension and makes you sink. Practice continuous, relaxed exhalation underwater. 2. Looking Too Far Forward: This drops your hips, creating drag. Keep your gaze directed down toward the bottom of the pool. 3. Over-reaching on the Catch: Crossing the center line when your hand enters the water leads to a 'snaking' motion. Enter the water in line with your shoulder. 4. Dropping Your Elbows: A high elbow catch is crucial for a powerful pull. Dropping your elbows reduces the surface area pulling you forward. 5. Kicking from the Knees: Your kick should originate from your hips. Kicking primarily from the knees is inefficient and tiring. Identify which of these mistakes you might be making and focus on correcting them one at a time during your practice sessions. You'll be amazed at the difference it makes!
