Choosing the Right Swim Gear for Beginners
A guide to selecting the best swimwear, goggles, and accessories for new swimmers.
Starting a new sport can be overwhelming, especially when you're faced with a wall of specialized equipment. But don't worry—as a beginner swimmer, you really only need a few essential items to get started comfortably.
The most important piece of gear is a well-fitting swimsuit. For fitness or lesson swimming, choose a suit designed for athletic activity rather than lounging. It should be snug but not restrictive, allowing for a full range of motion. For women, a one-piece or athletic two-piece is ideal. For men, jammers or brief-style trunks work best, as baggy board shorts create excessive drag.
Next, invest in a good pair of goggles. A comfortable pair that doesn't leak will completely change your experience in the water. Look for goggles with soft silicone gaskets and easily adjustable straps. It's often helpful to try on a few different styles to find the best fit for your face shape.
Finally, consider a swim cap. While not strictly necessary, a cap keeps hair out of your face, protects it from chlorine, and reduces drag. Silicone caps are generally more durable and easier to put on than latex ones. With these basics, you're ready to hit the pool!
