The Science of Buoyancy in Swimming

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to float effortlessly while others struggle to stay afloat? It all comes down to the science of buoyancy. Understanding how buoyancy works can significantly improve your swimming efficiency. Archimedes' principle states that an object immersed in a fluid experiences an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. In swimming, your body is the object. Whether you float or sink depends on your body composition—specifically, your ratio of fat to muscle and bone. Fat is less dense than water, so it floats. Muscle and bone are denser than water, so they sink. This is why individuals with a higher percentage of body fat generally find it easier to float. However, technique plays a massive role in managing buoyancy. By pressing your 'T' (the area where your sternum meets your collarbone) down into the water, you can leverage your lungs—which act like two balloons full of air—to bring your hips and legs to the surface. This horizontal alignment reduces drag and makes swimming much easier.
